Stockpiling

Learning how to stockpile food can actually come in handy if you are preparing for a disaster or if you are on a tight budget. Learning how to stockpile and build a food storage can save you money and time, if you do it right.

First of all, you are going to want to stock up on items that you will use. We are only going to buy these products when they are on sale and with a coupon. We are also not going to buy everything all at once. Your stockpile will gradually build up over a few months. Next thing you know, you'll have your own little "store" at home to shop from. (and no . . . you're not going to be hoarding).

Next, you are going to want to have a system. First in is always first out. When you buy new stock of items, it needs to go BEHIND what you already have so you can keep your stock rotated and fresh.
Have the right equipment. Depending on what your stocking up on, your equipment may differ. You may need shelving, freezers, or canning supplies.

How much do you need?
Well, it really depends on your family. Most families will like at least a 3 month supply, some will have a year to two years worth of items.
Do the Math: Make your list of regularly purchased items and determine how much of each item you use in an average month. Then multiply that number by the number of months you believe you'll need your stockpile.
If you use one box of spaghetti each week that is four boxes each month. If you want a three-month supply, you multiply four by three to find that you need 12 boxes of spaghetti for a three-month supply. Do this with each item on your list to get an idea of how much you will need for an adequate stockpile.
Use Online Calculators: There are also online calculators that can help you figure out how much food you will need for your size family.

Build Gradually: Don't think that you need to immediately go out and buy 12 boxes of spaghetti at one time. Remember, you will be building your stockpile gradually. Once it is built, you will find it easy to keep it stocked.
It really can be easy to begin to stockpile with the use of Grocery Smarts. If you want to learn how to use Grocery Smarts, contact me and I can teach you and your friends and family. Classes are FREE.
(that isn't my food storage...we have moved and right now mine is still in boxes. Once we have it all set up and organized I will most definitley post it). In the meantime, how about you all share pictures of your stockpile! Email me photos to kuuipovea@hotmail.com

Corny Cookies

I just found these fun cookies to make for the month of November. How fun are these?
Use your own cookie dough recipe, store bought dough or this recipe. They look fun to make and I can't wait to try them out with the girls!

These candy-topped treats are a blast for kids to help decorate for your feast -- or a Thanksgiving school party.

Ingredients
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Vanilla frosting
Green fruit leather
M&M's or Reese's Pieces candies
X
Instructions
Using an electric beater, cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix well. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix in the flour a little at a time until the ingredients are well combined. Chill the dough for several hours or overnight.
Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Divide the dough into 3 parts. Working on a floured surface with one part at a time, roll out the dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Using a knife, cut out corncob shapes about 4 inches long. Place the cookies on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 9 minutes or just until the edges brown. Let the cookies set on the sheets for about 2 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Frost the cooled cookies. Next, use kitchen shears to cut husks from the fruit leather to fit the sides of each cookie. Press the husks in place atop the frosting, with the tips down a bit. Now fill in the middle with candy kernels gently pressed into place. Makes about 1 1/2 dozen cookies.
